Oral Commentary Essay

â€Å"hello, this is jakob gonzalez. Today i will comment on Two Minue Drill by Mike Lupica. my focua will be to analyze the way the universal theme of dreaming represents Mike Lupica’s view of life as nobody is perfect.The view of life is established by Mike Lupica’s effective use of conflict resoltion, and character development. Pior to my analysis i will provide you an overview of my text. I will now summarize the main literary features of the novel Two Minute Drill. The setting of Two Minute Drill is around fall and one of the main settings would be perry’s field because that’s where scott hangs out with chris and that’s where he really gets him emotions out and doesn’t really focuson anything and th have a great tme with his dog Casey and Chris. The protagonist of Two Minute Drill is scott perry. Scott perry may be charcterized by the following two traits, shy and self conscious. the antagonist Jimmy Dolan may be characterized by the following two traits, selfish and greedy. The major internal conflict is Scott wants to get better at football and Chris wants toget better at math, and language arts. so they agree on a deal to help each other. The major external conflict is chris gets hurt in the championship game and scott has to get the final points to win. The main events of this novel are in the beginning Scott was the new kid and kept on getting bullied by Jimmy and after chris came in and told Jimmy to stop. A couple of weeks later chris saw how good scott was a kicker and wanted to tell everyone but scott was trying hold him back. Also chris finally told scott about how he cant read and totally freaked scott out about it. Finally the last major event would be when scott had to kick a field goal to win he game for the championship on the line and it was actually his first time on the field playing. the climax of Two Minute Drill is when chris finally told scott that he couldn’t read. The novel concludes with the following major event when they are at the championship game. The internal conflict is resolved when Scott got to get on the field and win the game for his team and chris passed his test and was able to play football. The external conflict is resolved when Scott got his chance to finally et on the field and prove to everyone that they were wrong about him not being a good football player. The resolution of these conflicts and the development of the protagonist over time establish the theme of never giving up. I will now comment on how Mike Lupica utilizes conflict, and resolution to establish a controlling impression and theme. Understanding the author’s craft in creating resolution to major conflicts in a novel crystallize the reader’s inference of theme.In Two Minute Drill there exist the following theme. The internal conflict is scott wants to get better at football and chris wants to get better at math an language arts so they agree to a deal to help each other out is illustrated in the following quote from the novel, â€Å"The deal is, you make me better at football, and i’ll make you better at school.†(78) This conflict occurs further in the novel, â€Å"Chris stared at the grade on the front, not changig expression until Mr.Dykes was past him. then chris looked back at scott and pointed at him. chris finally seen his grade, B.†(98). This internal conflict conflict is resolved when scoot helped out chris with his school work and passed Mr.Dykes test so he could play the championship game and chris helped scott with football and making tougher and he got his chance to kick the ball in the championship game. The following quote provides evidence of the authors resolution,† chris smiled with a cocy quaterback smiled, i told i’d get you better at football†.(180) and scott said â€Å"i told you i’d get you better at school†.(180) Mike Lupica crafted a resolution in which the protagonist scott learns that as long as youstick to something and get better at it something good will happen later.such a resolution allows the reader to understand the authors view of never giving up because scott knew that even though he didnt like playing football that the year with jimmy that he knew if he could get through the year maybe the coach will put him in the game to kick. The external conflict is chris getting hurtin the championship game, and scott having to get to the final points to win the game is illustrated in the following quote from the novel, â€Å"Mr.Dolan took off his cap despite the soaking rain, and rubbed his forehead.scott thought the coach looked lost for a moment. then suddenly coach called me out on to the field.(170)†. this conflict occurs further in the novel,†scott planted his left foot, not slipping even a little bit, dropped the ball perfectly in the spot he cleared.brought his right leg through. it cleared the cross bar with a couple of feet to spare(177)†. The external conflict is resloved when scott kicked the ball through the croosbar to win the game for his teammates. The following quote provides evidence of the authors resolution â€Å"i’m going to say this for the last, time, and i promised i wont say it again. i couldn’t do it without you(180)†. Mike Lupica crafted a resolution in whichthe protagonist scott learns that hint at character development and a furthering of the plot. such as a resolution allows the reader to understand the author’s view of never giving up because people will always make you doubt yourself and tell you what you want to achieve is impossible but doesn’t matter what other people think, its about how you can prove them wrong and tell them not everything is possible. Mike Lupica’s resolution to the stated conflict is but one aspect of understanding theme. a reader must recongnize and interpret character development over time to dive deeper into the author’s purpose in communication a view of life. The theme of never giving up is in part established by the characters actions,thoughts, and words and in their reactions to their repective conflicts. An analysis of the characters behavior allows the changes in the protagonist’s character hint to the author’s statement on life. the protagonist is best characterized by the following traits sy and self consious. For example , the trait of shy is evidence when † so he tried to not act like he was showing off, even though his hand still shot up more than anybody else’s in sixth grade(2).†This shows that the character posses the trait of shy because heknew that if he liftd his hand all the time then people would call him the nerd s he tried to not be so involved in the class so that no one knew who he is. In addition the trait of self conscious is evidence when â€Å"oh i get your one of those guys who doesn’t think kickers are real players(32). â€Å"This shows that the character posses the trait of self conscious because scott began to go into a shell and try to protect himself because he knew that chris was going to tell everyone about how he could kick the football.these triats, in part determine how the character will resolve his conflict. Internal conflict of scott wanting to get better at footballand chris wanting to get better at math and language arts so they agree to a deal to help each other outis resolved when scott takes te following action by tutoring chris at his house and then go in the backyard and chris would help scott become a better football player so he coulld kick a field goal in the game. The external conflict of scott wanting to get on the field and play is resolved when chris takes the following action to tell Mr.Dolan to put scott in because he knew that he could win the game for them.The conflict is resolved because he gets to kick the winning field goal for his teammates. The author’s ability to craft a protagonist’s development through conflict is an important aspect in a readers understaning of the main character. A reader wishes to know how thier character will handle adverse situations, and how they will be affected by their reaction to the situation.This is a quality that engages a reader and forwards the plot development. when a reader assasses the manner in which a character resolves his conflict through actions, thoughts, or words theme is evident As i have commented on my reading of Two Minute Drill by Mike Lupica. i have discussed the theme of never giving up and how this theme is understood through the analysis of scott handling oof his internal conflict and finally gettinhis opportunity to show everyone wrong and the external conflict on how scott got to kick the winning field goal and won the championship titl for his team thus learning the lesson of you dont want to be the person that is weak and gives up. As long as you keep on practicing something good will happen in return. my analysis of these aspects of my independent reading novel allows me to infer the theme of never giving up. At times the Unit will receive patients that have received medications for specific reasons or they have received pain medications for post-surgery purposes. Typically, the patients have received both fentanyl (a short-acting pain medication) and dilaudid (long-acting) pain medication. At times the anesthesiologist will not report when they gave the last dose of pain medication. The medication has been administered early in some cases, or late in the case of the patient having been in the operating room. However, this information is documented on the anesthesia work sheet. The Unit receives the patient from the operating room (OR) in the PACU and the patient may screaming or saying they are in pain. Thus, the patients may have too much dilaudid or fentanyl on board upon arrival to the PACU. Sometimes the best choice is to use the fentanyl-which is short-acting and has a peak time of 30 minutes and small amounts of the dilaudid. If a nurse gives a patient too much of either fentanyl or dilaudid, the patient may stop breathing or have complications which is considered a medication error and/or overdose. Managing pain medication in the PACU based on assessment is an art. It takes experience, great assessment skills, and knowing one's medications. Administering too much may slow the patient's breathing down and narcan may be needed to be given.

It can therefore be safely assumed that this research does not duplicate any study. LITERATURE LOCAL Manuel R. Santos expressed the view that the fate of the domestic helpers in the Philippines is somewhat disturbing. Majority of these young people are treated like animals although he said that not all are treated like animals. He said that not all these young people are badly treated but there are many of them who really received such maltreatment not only in our country but also abroad. Santos stressed the view that there is a need to amend the law about domestic helpers in such a way that they may be given opportunities to go to school and finish at least a college education. The author opinioned that most importantly, a domestic helper should receive a compensation commensurate to their workload with entitlement to a thirteen month pay and other benefits such as Medicare and SSS. He is proud that he is a college working student and advised that we need patience, time management and strong determination to graduate from the course we have chosen and be able to face those circumstances and trials that may come in the life of being a college working student. Veronica Rillorta, after her high school graduation, dreamed of going to college and taking up a course of her interest as the key to finding employment. But as June 2005 drew near, she started to get worried because her parents couldn’t send her to school. Her mother consoled her by saying that it would be her own choice if she wants to work and where to work. At first, Veronica worked as a waitress in a restaurant in their town. The restaurant served so many customers, that they could only eat their lunch at around 3:00 in the afternoon. After working for few weeks, she quit. She relaxed for a few days, but because she didn’t want to be a burden to her parents, she found work as saleslady. Unfortunately, her employer cooked up some gossip about her and told her relatives that she had many boyfriends. She explained to her mother and dissuaded her from confronting her employer. In this organization, it was shown that the members help each other and give moral support. It was revealed that the CFMW gave legal, financial and spiritual support to Filipinos overseas workers in London. According to Buendia, the Philippine government is not doing anything about what is happening to the Filipino women abroad. In spite of overwhelming proofs of this domestic helpers’ slavery, there has been no determined effort to help the victims. In fact the author pointed out that government officials kept on saying that they are doing everything about the problem, but up to now no law has been passed to protect the safety and interest of Filipino domestic helpers abroad, unless something concrete is done is pointed out by Buendia. The Filipino domestic helpers’ only choice aside from escape is to endure, pray and make sleep as their only escape from drudgery and cruelty as well as abuse Although some of the related literature did not directly show that the domestic Filipina helpers abroad was not studying while they worked as such, yet some of them study in their vacant times especially in the night. This could be due to the fact that these domestic helpers wanted to finish courses with foreign orientation. While the present study is concerned mostly on the problems, profile and motivations of part time working students in STI College Munoz, it has relations with those literature published in the local scene. Based on a study undertaken by the Philippine Overseas Employment Authority (POEA) Leonila Anastacio, only 49 percent of overseas workers in 1986 were women. In the first quarter of 1987, POEA data revealed that women migrant workers had outnumbered the men in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. In fact there were 40,000 Filipino now living in Great Britain in 1987 and almost 70 percent of this was women. Audience from different political and social classes had already arrived and set for the play. Being a male middle class person working as a journalist, I had to find myself a seat in front in an area created for the general public to be able to focus on the event and at the same time gather some reports about the performance and other reactions. Of course the VIPs had their special arrangement set for them with a different price from the rest. In the theatre, present were audience from different social classes. I only managed to identify two classes being the high class and the general public. The high class individual had seats reserved for them in a separate compartment of the theatre from the general public. The mode of dressing could tell everything. As an audience, I went to have fun, laugh, enjoy the performance and learn some few lessons from the play. Before the event kicked off, the manager of the theatre we lcomed all the audience with specific emphasis on the powerful artists and politicians who were present. This is the time I realized that even the monarch was present at the event. As the performance kicked off, people could not tell exactly what the theme of the play was to be until some two performers came on stage to remind us that this was a play and not a real life situation. Normally, events that take place in a theatre represent real life situation and this was the expectation of most of the audience present. However, Moliere broke this convention to make the audiences believe that a theatre is merely an establishment and that whatever that was going on was a play and not a real life event. The aspect of the performance that made a great impact on me and also to the audience was the theme of the performance. Focusing on the theme of the performance which was this is a play and not real life, the audiences were often reminded that this was a play and not a real life. This idea gathered support from other things including the presence of two men who were wearing masks and actors performance dressed in black dresses and capes. They acted a role of separating the play scenes by sometimes hiding performers and also acting as a door to separate the performance. Personally, I think there presence on stage was to give support to the idea that this was a play and not a real life event. The idea was also supported by various gestures and mimes which sounded exaggerated. What I did not like about the play was actually the subject which was related to the present society. Despite being in its originality, it sounded ordinary and did not make me remember it and think of it after the play. However, there was totally no boredom among the audience and I could tell this from the sounds, cheering and the facial expression from the audience. This was because of the tempo which was kept constant and took the attention of the audience at all times me included. Other things that kept the audience away from bored were the lighting up system during the performance which kept on changing and the background music whose speed was directed as the acting went on. The dressing mode of the actors was also another appealing feature of the day. Generally, I enjoyed the performance, laughed a lot and from the facial expression, cheering and reaction of other spectators, I believe they also enjoyed the play. It was wonderful. Psychological Analysis: Character Subtext or Motivation for Passion Life is a dream Life is a dream is a Spanish age play set during the mythical version of the Polands kingdom. The play reveals the story of Basilio who decides to send his son, Segismundo to prison at birth with a reason that the astrological studies he has been undertaking has given him a fear that this son might grow up and become rebellious or be a tyrant to his authority. Calderon gives a first hand consideration to two forces of free will and determinism which appears to contrast each other in this fable as the forces responsible and required to shape human character as well as destiny. Considering the subplot, we find Rosaura who seeks to look for Astolfo for dishonoring her after the marriage promise. The problems examined by Calderon are mostly related to vengeance and honor. In this paper, I will narrow down to the psychology of one character in this play called Segismundo and his struggle for his passions. The issue I will be focusing on is his struggle to overturn his destiny and liberty. Segismundo being the son of the king of Poland, Basilio, lived a life of not even knowing his identity due to his fathers fear that he might turn his back on him following the astrological studies. At birth, he was imprisoned after his fathers charting with his horoscope which revealed to him that his son will grow up and be a treacherous son as well as a savage ruler. After some time, his father devised rules that eventually freed his son from prison and gave him the power of a king just for a day. But because of the brutality and the cruelness of his son, the father finally confirmed his fear and ordered him to be returned back to the prison. However, after his liberation from the tower for the second time, he struggles a lot and overcomes his brutality as well as his earlier predestined identity. This is what we call struggle for passion. The culture of the Hispania at that particular time lied in the horoscopes revealing. But we see Segismundo struggling to overturn his destiny and his predestined identity. According to how he describes himself and also how other people describes him, Segismundo is actually a beast or simply force of nature. He is normally clothed with things like animal skins and he is fond of contrasting himself with fish and other animals like snakes, streams as well as volcanoes. Just before he is taken to court, Clotaldo comes in and fills his mind to become an image of an eagle. Considering the meaning of his name, it stands contrary to the predatory imagery and the happenings that are surrounding him and signifies his triumph for his unchangeable fate that is written in the stars. His name Segism undo which means victory and protector according to the Germans justifies his ending when Rosaura comes in his picture and awakens new perception in him. Through her, Segismundo gets to understand the meaning of honor. Rosaura completely parallels Segismundos actions and serves as his guide eventually succeeding in converting him. Therefore, Segismundo eventually succeeds in fulfilling his struggle for passion and liberty with conversion into a loyal person unlike the Hispanias horoscope predetermined his destiny. Personally, I consider this as a fight and struggle for passion and overturn of nature. At this time he was in love, Smith was to still perform his roles and responsibilities as the present of the Jamestown as well as face the challenges that befall him on which path to choose between staying with the fallen apart colony or decide to move up the river in the world to love Pocahontas. Finally she finds herself falling apart in making a decision on who between the two to dedicated to. Discussion The major themes that were evident in the film were love and death. The theme of love becomes evident when Smith goes up the river to meet natives and carry out trade for their necessities like food. Instead, Smith survives alone out of the whole brigade and meets a beautiful lady called Pocahontas whom he falls in love with. But because the two are from different cultural backgrounds one being English and another being native American, their true love is hindered from being ideal. Although there are some scenes of intimacy between the two, sexuality is not emphasized but the acts of talking and staring at each other are given priority. Because the father of Pocahontas was the king of the Jamestown in which Smith had gone, he becomes so upset with his daughter for falling in love with an English man. Being capable (king) of doing anything to Smith, Pocahontas decides to risk her life and protect Smith from being killed. She does this until Smith is finally evicted out of the town saf ely. She risks her life to protect Smith and others from being attacked by the Asians by being their hostage. The issues that evolve in this film are about faith. Towards the end of the film, we find the long held traditions of the Indian never to be converted into Christianity are broken when Pocahontas decides to get baptized and be converted into a Christian. She is quoted praying to the lord to help her be humble. This is not normal as the Indian rejects Christianity and at no time will you find one of them being converted to a Christian. The point of connection that is evident in the film between historical culture, time period and theatrical tradition comes towards the end when all the traditional ties are broken and various cultures merged including change of religion. Pocahontas finally marries Rolfe who adopted the English culture. The audience that will find this movie interesting and appealing are the grown ups who are eighteen years and above. This is because they understand emotions, religion and love. Young people may find it not good due to some scenes of long kissing and others that suggest nudity. Personally, the themes were good and the characters demonstrated the themes in a perfect manner. The direction and visual story telling was of high quality and appealing and the general story was flowing. However, the only thing that I dint like about this film is the way Christianity was portrayed. The English were portrayed as cruel and uncivilized people while the Indians portrayed as humble, civilized and welcoming people. To me, Christianity is about declaration that everyone is a sinner by nature and needs to repent.

The Conqueror Worm and the End of the World Edgar Allen Poe is one of the fathers of terror and mystery.   His twisted, Macabre tales and poems are filled with great detail and often end with a dismal twist.   "The Conqueror Worm" is one example of his masterful rhymes and tells how a play on life turns into reality for mankind.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The setting is a theater but it is not just a site for plays.   Poe describes it to be that way to trick the reader, but the theater is actually the setting for mankind.   We play our lives in this stage for everyone else to see.   Lines three through six describe the crowd and how they are there to see "a play of hopes and fears."   If people would look beyond the point of reading the line just to understand the words, they would see that the play is actually the lives of everybody in society.   I say this because everyone has their own hopes like getting a good job, succeeding, having a family and ultimately dieing happily.   Along with their hopes, everyone also has their personal fears.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The characters of the poem are also some very meaningful keys in showing the hidden meaning.   The first stanza describes the crowd that has gathered to watch the enactment of our human lives.   Lines three and four states "an angel throng, bewinged, and bedight in veils, and drowned in tears."   Poe is stating that a group of angels is going to watch the spectacle put on for them, although they are already drowning in the tears from plays before.   The orchestra that plays for them is another set of characters that have meaning.   They represent the background in everyone's life by "playing the music of the spheres."   A third set of characters that show hidden meaning is the "Mimes, in the form of God on high."   They denote the people that inhabit the earth.   Poe describes them as "Mere puppets they, who come and go at bidding of vast formless things."   The vast formless things are the ideas that we have.   Ideas l ike the things that we think we have to do for ourselves to survive and succeed.   They also make up drama of the play.   A final, prominent figure in this dramatic performance is the conqueror worm.   Poe illustrates it as "a blood-red thing.

Mr. Columbus was quite a sales pitch expert. He wanted to find a passage to China, through unmarked waters. He had to receive funding for the great adventure, which had to be covered by the richest of the rich. The only place he could go would have to be the king of Spain. The fact that Columbus was Italian (a foreigner) he had to definitely make an impression on the king. Another problem was the fact that Columbus had never actually been a captain on a ship, only a passenger. There was also not a huge market for a Trans-Atlantic voyage. The fact that the idea of the world being round was a somewhat new aspect. It was amazing that this trip had started at all. The price of this trip included several boats, manpower, and survival supplies. This was all he needed to do the trip. This was not enough. Christopher wa nted 10% commission on all commerce between his discoveries and the mother country, the title of Admiral of the Ocean Sea, permanent position of governor of all new territories, and a long list of other personal demands. Brave New World After reading the novel Brave New World by Aldus Huxley it is easily realized that it is unlike any other classic story. It predicts a future overpowered by technology and where the people have no religion. The plot of the story made me think if this would be a perfect place to live or a terrible place to live. It is hard to distinguish where the line is drawn between making life simpler and losing the meaning of life. Although some may look upon this type of life with envy I personally would rather have to work harder than to lose myself. The first think that made me dislike the ideas is this book was the fact that the government overpowered the world, causing the loss of freedom. Never having to worry about a job is something most people would appreciate, but at the same time it is not worth losing all freedoms. Freedom is more important to happiness than having needs automatically satisfied. I also feel that religion plays an important role in people's lives. It represents our principles and values. Religion guides us, gives us something to believe in and a set of rules to live by. Mustapha Mond when referring to the Holy Bible says that "they're old; they're about God hundreds of years ago. Not about God Now" (Huxley 237). Mustapha Mond is saying that with the evolution of time the need for religion has disappeared and has been replaced by the worship of another God who is Ford. It is stated that they basically live a fulfilled life, according to a strict set of rules and then they die. But is that really a fulfilled life? Also thanks to their conditioning they do not fear death but accept it as a way of life. That alone is a task that our world still has not been able to accomplish, but if the loss of a life means nothing, wouldn’t that reflect that the life itself meant nothing? In this civilization, the people are isolated from one another, divided into five different classes. In every society there will be invisible classes of people, but to have them so defined is a crime. No one is given the chance to move up and make more of themselves. The members of each class are ranked according to their mental capacity and physical appearance.

Freudian approaches to Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Essay

I will discuss how Freudian theory ties in with the issues featuring in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Sigmund Freud the founder of psychoanalysis came up with a theory of the unconscious mind, he identified that sexual desires are the primary motivational energy of human life. William shows this in play by Margaret’s sexual desires for Brick keeps her energy up and gets her to keep trying to get Brick’s affection. Big Daddy and Big Mama have fears and anxieties about Margaret and Bricks lack of children, and so does Margaret herself because she wants a share of the plantation. However this does not worry Mae and Gooper who are more than happy that they are prime candidates to become the owner of the plantation, Mae especially enjoy sneer at the fact that Margaret is childless â€Å"Mae: she’s childless because that big beautiful athlete of hers won’t go to bed with her† (97). The family especially Big Daddy and Maggie have doubts about Brick’s sexuality and try to confront him about it. Brick: â€Å"You think that me and Skipper were a pair of dirty old men?† (pg 77). Symbolism definitely shown in ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’, Bricks crutch can symbolise that he needs support, â€Å"Brick: no just give me my crutch† (27). The crutch can be seen as symbol that Brick is weak without skipper hence needs support. But it can also represent the fact that Brick has lost his masculinity ‘Brick: I’m getting softer Maggie’ (pg 31) and the crutch is his masculinity hence why he cannot go anywhere without it. The alcohol symbolises that Brick is trying to escape reality by making himself unconscious or in his words the ‘click’ which he says to be when he is peaceful with himself. However the excessive drinking by Brick can also mean that Brick cannot cope without Skipper. Repression of homosexuality in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof ties in with Sigmund Freud ideology, as Brick represses his feeling towards Skipper Brick: â€Å"I had friendship with Skipper – you are naming it dirty!† (pg 42).Repression is a defence mechanism and there are two stages, firstly the desires are pushed out from conscious into unconscious but this does not work for Brick as his feeling still surface. So the second line of defence is started this is where Brick is at in the book. Williams shows Brick as being reluctant to come out about his sexuality because he is brought up in an upper class family. One type of second line defence is overcompensation which is when a weakness is covered up by overcompensating on something else, in Bricks case is excessive sport. Then comes projection which is when you blame someone else; Brick blames â€Å"Maggie(79)† because she got â€Å"the idea (79)† that Brick and Skipper relationship was abnormal and that one reason why Skipper committed suicide. Then comes denial when protecting you from unpleasant reality which is seen in Brick as he tries to deny the truth when Big Daddy talks about it. Brick â€Å"YOU THINK SO TOO? You think me an skipper did sodomy†(77). Brick tries to justify it was Maggie who put dirty things into Skipper minding doubting himself about his sexuality, Brick trying to repress any arguments down to Margaret being jealous. Brick comes from an upper-class family who are highly respected from other people. The time when the story was set (1955) was a time when homosexuals were looked down upon and brought shame to their family. Brick is from a rich family, so he hides his sexuality so not to embarrass himself or his family, and marries Maggie to show that he is a man and tries to show his masculinity by being an athlete. Death features massively in the play, especially for Big Daddy who has cancer yet has been lied to by the family saying that he has a spastic colon. Big Daddy is also in denial because he himself knows everything is not alright because of the pain yet is putting a front on. Big Daddy and Big Mama have been told that he does not have cancer when he does and the only people that know are Mae and Gooper and Brick and Maggie. Big Mama is told her husband still has cancer later, but she says â€Å"it’s all a mistake† (93). Skipper is dead which makes Brick angry and blames his wife for the death. Margaret say is begging for Brick attention when she says â€Å"Skipper is dead! I am alive!†, but Brick does not want to believe that Skipper is dead â€Å"I tried to kill your Aunt Maggie, but I failed.† Brick definitely does not love Maggie and is shown in different way for example[She kisses Brick on the mouth which he immediately wipes with the back of his hand, (55pg).Bricks sexual desire keep surfacing no matter how much he is trying to suppress, so he tries to get his manhood back by jumping hurdles at the school athletic field but ends up fracturing his ankle. It shows that Brick is weak and helpless without Skipper. But also can be also interpreted to show Freud theory of sexual desires becomes energy for human life. Freud theory can relate to Cat on a Hot Tin Roof because unconscious and sexual desire relate to the character Brick who is trying to suppress his abnormal feeling from conscious to unconscious. In addition there is fear of death by Big Daddy and there are sexual desires.

Assess the success of different methods used to overcome the imbalance between population and food supply

The term imbalance refers to a difference between the population's demands for food and the actual food supply. It is estimated that the current population of the earth is six billion people. There are two main theories that relate to population growth and food supply, these being the â€Å"Malthusian theory† and the â€Å"Boserup theory†. Thomas Malthus was an English clergyman and economist who lived from 1766 to 1834; Malthus expressed a pessimistic view over the dangers of overpopulation. He believed that the food supply was the main limiting factor to population growth. He also believed that human population increases geometrically whereas food supplies can only grow arithmetically. A Danish economist put the optimistic theory together in 1965 her name was Esther Boserup. She believed that an increase in population would stimulate technologists to increase food production. The sentence â€Å"Necessity is the mother of invention† sums up the Boserup theory. Agricultural Responses The green revolution is a worldwide agricultural movement but it all started in Mexico in 1944 and it involved the simultaneous development of 2 things; these include: > New varieties of food plants. > Altered agricultural practises that greatly increase crop yields. When the green revolution started in Mexico in 1944, it was importing half its wheat but twenty years later it was able to export half a million tons of wheat due to the green revolutions effectiveness. Even though in theory it achieved what it was set up to do it still had many disadvantages. Many farmers who invested heavily in the new technologies brought in from the western world found themselves laden with massive debts. An example of this is the Punjab area of India where the debt in rural areas has run to a staggering fifty billion rupees (à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½745 Million). Also excessive pumping has led to a drop in groundwater and the water has become saline. Other problems cased by the green revolution include: > Human population growth > Diminished â€Å"biodiversity† in crops > Inherent soil fertility and water quality > Pesticides > Land degradation Demographic Response A demographic response to over population is China's one child policy. This policy was brought in by the communist government in 1979 to try and reduce China's ever-growing population. To aid this policy they brought in a law limiting a couple to only have one child. There are exceptions to this law ethnic minority are formal exceptions and families that produce a child with a mental or physical disabilities are sometimes allowed to have a second child. There is also financial incentives for couples to remain childless of only have one child. This however has had some very serious implications these include: > Human rights issues > Female infanticide > Sex imbalance > Aging population The policy is also difficult to enforce in rural areas where the policy is more open to corruption as large families are needed to support their parents in old age. Sometimes pregnant women would even be sent to relatives so that a child would be unregistered. This policy has proven to be fairly successful as it has managed to reduce population growth so that the population is remaining stable however it has not managed to reduced the population and it is not meeting its targets. My conclusion is that both approaches to tackling this global problem have positives and negatives to be taken from them. But on the whole they are causing more problems than they are solving so therefore I believe that both solutions are failing.

Classical Hollywood Style Essay

‘Classical Hollywood cinema possesses a style which is largely invisible and difficult for the average spectator to see. The narrative is delivered so effortlessly and efficiently to the audience that it appears to have no source. It comes magically off the screen.’ John Belton, film scholar, Rutgers University Classical Hollywood narrative refers to the filmmaking tradition established in Hollywood during the 1920s and 1930s. It became the dominant style throughout the western world against which all other styles were judged. While there have been some challenges to it in recent years, it remains the accepted style for most Hollywood films today. The Hollywood style is so effective in convincing us what we see on the screen is real that we often have to forcibly remind ourselves that it is ‘only a movie’. Oddly Hollywood, so often associated with everything that is fake, is also the home of classical narrative realism. ‘Tinsel town’ has spent a fortune every year since the 1920s faking realism. What are classical Hollywood narrative films? Classical Hollywood narrative films have plots that progress through time in a linear way, are based on character-driven action and use the continuity editing style (see page 233). The style is ‘classical’ because it is based on the classical principles of literature and art. A work is described as classical if it has perfect balance and symmetry. It must also be clear, simple and free of excesses of emotionalism or irrelevant detail. From beginning to end, all elements must be integrated and the resulting sense of harmony should reassure and satisfy the audience. Features of classical Hollywood narrative The Hollywood style takes advantage of the compact people make with the filmmaker when they pay their ticket price. They willingly want to ‘suspend disbelief’ (see page 135). Deep down, people know it is tomato sauce, but they really want to believe it is blood. In a conspiracy with the audience to make movies believable, classical Hollywood narrative has developed the following features. Three-act narrative. Hollywood plots are set out according to the three-act structure of orientation, complication and resolution (see pages 138-9). A situation is presented, a disruption is introduced, and then the resolution ties everything up in a strong closure. Life is not so simple, of course, and actual events rarely have such neat starts or finishes. Even so, the word realism can be applied to Hollywood style because it is based on classic literary narrative realism. Objective storytelling. The audience in a Hollywood film knows more than the characters do. We are able to see what is happening in other places at the same time, and we can see what other characters are doing. In this respect we are god-like – we can see everything! This makes the style of storytelling objective, according to film academics David Bordwell and Kristen Thompson. It also allows us to accept simultaneous time or parallel editing (see page 25). Character driven. The American style of cinema is almost exclusively concerned with individual characters (and stars). This contrasts sharply with the Soviet montage style of filmmaking. The objective of the Hollywood movie is to relate what happens to the characters and whether or not they got what they wanted. The films have strong individual characters who struggle to fulfil their hopes and goals. These characters are arranged in a hierarchy, from hero or protagonist (see page 141) to antagonist and then down to minor characters and supporting cast. Mise-en-scene. One of the most important aspects of Hollywood style is the mise-en-scene (see page 17), whose sole function is to manufacture realism. Time and space. American movies have a strong sense of movement – either through time or through geography. The story movement through time most often follows a straightforward line of episodic events. Flashbacks or flashforwards may be used, but the overall linear direction is strongly maintained. Whether through time or space, movement is totally subordinate to the action, say Bordwell and Thompson. Only the bits that are important to the story are shown. Classical continuity editing. A typical feature film has between 800 and 1200 shots. Editing is designed to render all these shot changes invisible or imperceptible. Editing in the invisible style serves to hide any jumps or discontinuities that would alert the viewer to ‘non-reality’. Following are some of the features of continuity editing (more detail is provided in chapter 2): †¢ Shot progressions in the classical Hollywood style – ELS, LS, MS, CU †¢ Continuity cutting – for example, cutting on action or movement to distract the viewer †¢ Matching techniques to hide cuts – for instance, eyelines are matched †¢ Transitions such as dissolves smooth the remaining joins where necessary †¢ Simultaneous time or parallel editing (crosscutting) †¢ Application of the 18O degree rule †¢ Use of three-point lighting to naturalise appearances †¢ Use of music is subservient to the story – it just reinforces the meaning.

Fleet Current fleet: As of December 2012, the Jetstar Group fleet consists of 96 aircraft, including: 79 Airbus A320-200 aircraft, seat-configured for up to 180 passengers Six Airbus A321 aircraft, seat-configured for 220 passengers 11 Airbus A330-200 aircraft, with two cabins (economy and business) for up to 310 passengers Fleet orders:Jetstar has ordered 14 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are due to be delivered in 2013. These new-generation aircraft include features such as larger windows, improved cabin pressure to reduce jetlag and fuel consumption about 20 per cent lower than similar-sized aircraft. In August 2011 the Qantas Group placed an order for 110 Airb us A320s. The Jetstar Group has access to these aircraft to facilitate its growth. This includes 78 A320 NEOs (New Engine Option), which reduce fuel consumption by 15 per cent and will be available for delivery from 2015. Should any customer find a lower fare online, on the same day, same route and at a comparable time, Jetstar will beat the fare by 10 per cent. Customer experience Jetstar customers only pay for what they need. Customers can choose between two types of fares – Economy or Business (on selected international flights).Once a fare is selected, customers have the option to add on checked baggage between 15 †“ 40 kilos per passenger and/or a bundle of extras, which can include seat selection, in-flight products, fare flexibility, lounge access and Qantas Frequent Flyer Points. For domestic flights on Jetstar Australia and New Zealand, passengers may choose to purchase a variety of snacks and beverages. Jetstar Asia will welcome an additional two A320 aircraft this year for flying from Singapore and an additional A320 aircraft will be added to domestic New Zealand flying. In Singapore, we will be adding an additional two A320 aircraft to its fleet of 10 based in Singapore by the end of 2010, which is in addition to the commencement of first time value-based long-haul flying from December, which will eventually see two A330 aircraft based in Singapore.At Jetstar Pacific in Vietnam, we are planning the introduction of its second A320 aircraft to join its existing fleet of five B737s and one A320 this calendar year a s part of a fleet renewal process towards a future all-A320 operation. How has Jetstar performed financially, and what are your expectations looking ahead? Jetstar Brands posted an EBIT of $131 million Australian dollar for the financial year ending June 2010. How does Jetstar perceive the competition once Thai Tiger Airways gets off the ground and how will you cope with it given that several low-cost irlines are competing in the same areas. Will price-cutting be the answer? The Thai market has always been a competitive one and we don't expect that to change as new entrants come onto the market. Of all the low-cost carriers, Jetstar is the only one to offer a low fares guarantee which stipulates that should a customer find a lower-fare online on the same date at a comparative time to a Jetstar service, Jetstar will be discount that fare by 10 per cent.
